Here at CJKing & Co Printers we continually endeavor to bring you great quality printing and returning your desired result to complete satisfaction. Unfortunately we are continually receiving artwork setup errors and also discovering new issues with some of the latest software releases that are easily avoided. In this email I would like to explain some of these issues and ways to avoid them.
If there are any issues or questions you may have regarding artwork issues please contact brendan@cjking.com.au.
If you can note these things for future artworks, checking them before setup is vital and can save you expensive reprints.
Healthy Artwork Practices for Ordering and Archiving through CJKing.
Here are some basic revision on correct proceedings against setting up your artwork for our system that we prefer you consider.
Bleed: Please include 2mm bleed minimum on all your artworks. This is additional to the set sizing that is stated on the artwork sizes on Pressboss,. Landscape or Portrait doesn't matter. There is a warning that announces itself with the sizing is incorrect after the press' RIP, please ignore this as we are currently rectifying this situation with Iway v5.0
Fonts: Correct practice is to outline your fonts before submitting them to any other party. I will rattle off some reasons why; Firstly as it gives you more control over your artwork in it's raw format. There are many different ways to strip a pdf and convert it into a raw editable file. The second reason is for font issues from computer to computer. This is a problem when using artworks with unoutlined fonts and the font is not present. This Also becomes a problem when the font isn't a registered font. A displayed message usually appears to inform you of embedding problems with the font. Now this will look fine on your computer but not on another that doesn't have the fon't. You will be warned of this after the press' RIP and you should pay attention to this font warning, although it can be avoided all together by outlining your fonts. I'll explain further on correct outlining as saving practices.
Colours: Save your files with the colour Profile Europe ISO Coated FOGRA27. This delivers the most true colours toward the Heidelberg press. Other profiles deliver different colour gamuts and there can be a large variation in colours because of this colour conversion. The biggest mistake you can make is begining your file as an RGB file and then converting the colours to CMYK which then delivers for example a Back that becomes a dark green and numbered as C72.66 M70.7 Y63.28 K75.78 if you select an RGB colour onto a CMYK canvas. OR C85.55 M84.77 Y78.52 K100 for Converting RGB into CMYK Mode. So be carful when setting up colours on your artworks by all means. We will touch more on colours in future emails.
Saving: When saving your files, save them as an outlined copy and date the title if possible. A method that should be used by all artists is a system where you can archive all your saved and submitted documents. Although sometimes this can be space consuming, it can save you a headache in the future. By saving files you have submitted to us as a different pdf to say your raw file this will allow you to re-order that file that your client requested that was from the previous time as they didn't like the colour for example.
CJKing continue to deliver you some of the cheapest prices in Australia as standard. But for this to happen we run on a system that does require you to understand the following setup issues, some are difficult to detect and will not show in your proofs but will require a bit of checking on your end before you pre-press. So when you do your spell check and pre-press proofing note these issues below;
Error: Borders are not lining up with the media edges Solution: Adjust all future artworks
We are still receiving fine borders around the trim lines of some artworks. Please note that the ram cutting blades can shift up to 1mm each way & this can have a terrible effect on your print job containing borders close to the print edge. inline borders and even borders will now be not accepted by CJKing due to the continual returns we are receiving and for this reason all your future artworks should not contain borders in relation to the print edge.
Error: My background pattern has moved OR my Dropshadow has moved
Solution: Expand your fills
Fills are a big no-no in any print job. Signage or stationary, these require a pdf to be placed on a print run which can effect it in relation to it's document positioning. Fills run on a document positioning, not a shape positioning where it can me moved around the canvas. The simple solution is expand them into a shape, then you have complete control over it's positioning. Fills are classed as a quick shortcut to receive a pattern and are quite an effective artwork technique in some circumstances. But, if you require a static position for the fill you are risking a 99% chance that it will be placed differently to your original proof, it is very simply avoided my turning it into a picture or vector.
To do this on illustrator: simply go to the object button selecting the shape with the applied fill and click "expand".
Error: Object in my artwork didn't print, but it was there in my proof
Solution: un-select overprint fill on the object. you can detect if there is any overprint supplied by selecting overprint preview in the view menu.
We are still experiencing alot of overprint fill errors. If something contains overprint fill setting in white it simply will not print as you cannot print white. Continually we receive autopsy reports arguing the exact error line above but this is an artwork setup error and we cannot detect every overprint error that comes through, so if you can do a simple procedure before you save your print ready pdf and check out the overprint preview to see if you have accidently included any overprint fills as these will disappear in your preview.
Error: I cannot Upload my file
Solution: Save as pdf and Reduce file size to high quality print, we do not need the complete raw file unless asked.
To ensure you get a better result and reduce the file uploading time of your file, save your file as a .pdf rather than an .eps. By reducing the upload you are also reducing the chance of the file becoming corrupt due to a bad upload or communication issues do to the large expanse of time required to upload. This has also led to errors in missing information in the past.
All of these issues I have address here in your memo are rendered as artwork setup issues and CJKing takes no responsibility of these errors. If you can see an error in your finished product with lamination or poor quality production please send us a sample of the work and we'll endeavor to assist you professionally. All Artwork errors please fill out an Autopsy report and let us know what the issue is and we'll see to it that we discover the problem. If it is an error from CJKing we will gladly reprint the job free of charge in the shortest timeframe possible*.
